Abstract
The essay deals with the translation of Euripides’ Helen, made for the theatrical season INDA 2019 (Greek Theatre of Syracuse), staged and directed by Davide Livermore. The author briefly describes the criteria he followed and offers his personal reading of the key characters of the play (Helen, Menelaus, Theoclymenus). The underlying contention is that theatrical translation is usually more negatively conditioning than positive, on staging. While the translator who works well may not make decisive contributions to the success of the show, the one who works badly usually causes very serious damage. Hence the need for the translation to be simple, functional, and, where necessary, flexible, without any showing off and self-promotion by the translator.
