Abstract
The essay examines the German translation of Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus by the theatre director Peter Stein as the basis for his Ödipus auf Kolonos, staged in the summer 2010 at the Salzburg Festival and then performed again at the Berliner Ensemble. For his version, from the original Greek, Stein adopted strategies of translation which he had already experimented in his previous Oresteia in 1980, with an intense preparatory work based on the comparison of various
critical editions and the study of interpretative essays. Such a technique of translation, which can be called “expressive dilation”, consists in rendering a Greek term or expression with multiple synonyms in German, with an explanatory function for the public. The essay also analyses some aspects of the scenography (such as the antinomy of chromaticism in order to suggest ideological distinctions) and the correspondence between the purely “existential” reading that Stein suggests
with a widespread hermeneutical perspective of Oedipus at Colonus.
