Theatre of Shadows and War. The Persians in the 21st Century

Abstract

Aeschylus’ Persai, a tragedy of war, of winners and losers, of sea and blood, of a nature subjugated by man and by which man is subjugated, a tragedy of shadows, of compassion: The Persians performed by I Sacchi di Sabbia, Die Perser by Dimiter Gotscheff, The Persians by Bread and Puppet Theater are significant examples of the contemporary re-thinking of Greek tragedy related to the theatre of war. A crytical analysis of these performances allows to address many themes and problems we have been posed in the Editorial of the IV issue of Visioni del tragico.
